Plot of Though Waters Roar
Harriet, a young adult, lands herself in jail for defying the Prohibition. As Harriet ponders the choices that led to this point, she recalls all she has learned about her grandmother's life. Harriet adores her grandmother Bebe but doubts Bebe will understand Harriet's reasoning. After all, Bebe has devoted her life to getting rid of saloons and bringing in the Prohibition. But Harriet has nowhere else to turn.
Why to Read Though Waters Roar
Austin explores big issues in American history, issues including slavery, the Prohibition, and women's voting rights. But she explains these grand issues in terms of individual lives, and we come to understand how such things could impact one human being's choices.
Austin also makes her story very relevant for today's readers. As Bebe wisely concludes, " 'I've come to realize that our short time here on earth isn't about what we accomplish, but about what sort of people we become' " (425). Austin weaves this theme subtly through the stories of several generations of women.
The issues have changed. Today Christian women may become involved in social issues such as abortion, euthanasia, drug abuse, and so forth. Even in daily matters of career, family, or ministry, we sometimes become so focused on reaching our goals that we forget God's purpose for us. God wants us to become more like Christ, a truth which Austin communicates skillfully through her characters. Austin's message is most timely indeed.
